RESEARCH ACTIVITIES – SUMMARY

My research uses models of social cognition and self-regulation to understand how attitudes and health-relevant behaviors form, persist and change, from the automatic effects of media exposure to large-scale cross-cultural regularities in social behavior. Each project is conducted collaboratively with colleagues across several universities, and my recent work has broadened along six interconnected strands.

Media exposure, implicit attitudes and the formation of alcohol-related cognitions

A first strand examines how representations of alcohol are formed and how they influence behavior. Incidental exposure to alcohol advertising and sponsorship in the media plays a causal role in shaping attitudes toward alcohol, but the underlying processes differ: sponsorship effects appear to rest on mere exposure and automatic acquisition (Zerhouni et al., 2016; Zerhouni, Bègue & O’Brien, 2019), whereas exposure to depicted consumption relies more on propositional processes (Zerhouni et al., 2020a, 2020b; Bonneterre* et al., 2021). At the societal level, this work has addressed the effects of alcohol on deviant and aggressive behavior and on judicial appraisal (Bègue, Zerhouni & Jobard, 2020; Bègue et al., 2022; Zerhouni, Girod & Flaudias, 2019). More recently, we have shown that indirect measures of attitudes only weakly predict food-choice behavior, even when heuristics are involved, and produced the first meta-analysis of the organic “halo” effect on calorie estimation (Besson* et al., 2019; Besson, Durand & Zerhouni, 2025; Durand, Besson, Flaudias & Zerhouni, 2025).

Cognitive remediation and immersive (virtual-reality) prevention for health-behavior change

A second strand develops and evaluates prevention and cognitive-remediation procedures targeting addictive behaviors. This includes work on the cognitive antecedents of substance use and on prevention programs that modulate them (Bertin, Zerhouni et al., 2018; Brousse, Zerhouni et al., 2018; Flaudias, Zerhouni et al., 2020), culminating in a Bayesian meta-analysis of cognitive bias modification (Boffo, Zerhouni et al., 2019). We have tested low-cost alternatives based on evaluative conditioning, attentional-bias training and smartphone applications (Zerhouni et al., 2018, 2019; Lalot, Zerhouni & Pinelli, 2017), and a two-year comprehensive program preventing new substance use in youth (Zerhouni, Loisy, Bouthier & Flaudias, 2024). A growing part of this work uses immersive virtual reality to evaluate anti-tobacco and anti-alcohol prevention messages, showing effects on memorization, attitudes and craving that are sometimes counter-intuitive (Bonneterre* et al., 2024a, 2024b, 2025; Nègre et al., 2023).

Behavioral addictions: gambling, screens and compulsive use

A third strand concerns behavioral addictions. Building on a meta-analytic review of gambling advertising (Bouguettaya, Lynott, Carter, Zerhouni et al., 2020), we have shown that weaker social support and poorer emotion regulation are associated with more severe gambling, and that problem gamblers are disproportionately affected by advertising campaigns (Tessier* et al., 2021, 2023; Tessier, Romo, Gonthier & Zerhouni, 2025). This strand extends to screen and internet use, including prosocial and toxic behavior in online games (Lemercier-Dugarin, Romo & Zerhouni, 2020, 2021) and, in recent adolescent cohorts, the role of sleep disturbance and temporal patterns of screen time in compulsive internet use (Imrani, Touri, Romo & Zerhouni, 2026a, 2026b).

Self-regulation, stress and decision-making in health and social contexts

A fourth strand investigates how self-regulation, in particular stress regulation indexed by cardiac variability, shapes attitudes, social cognition and behavior. This includes work on autonomic reactivity and authoritarian or political attitudes (Lepage, Bègue, Zerhouni et al., 2018, 2022) and on the moderation of evaluative conditioning by physiological arousal and chronic emotion-regulation difficulties (Zerhouni & Lepage, 2018; Besson*, Richetin & Zerhouni, 2023). A sustained line of work examines tolerance of uncertainty, stress and critical thinking in medical decision-making among health professionals and the general population (Brun, Zerhouni et al., 2022a, 2022b), and the interplay of stress, dehumanization and burnout in care settings (Mollet, Zerhouni et al., 2026; Zerhouni & Romo, 2025).

Cross-cultural and evolutionary approaches to social behavior

A fifth, increasingly prominent strand situates social behavior in cross-cultural and evolutionary perspective through large international consortia. This includes work on predictors of physical-attractiveness enhancement across 93 countries (Kowal et al., 2022), romantic love and mate preferences across 175 countries (Kowal et al., 2025), the role of infectious-disease history in self-reported health across countries (Pfuhl et al., 2025), and — most recently — a large-scale analysis of sociosexual orientation, life-history strategy and reproductive success across 92 societies (Grigoryev et al., 2026, Evolution and Human Behavior). Related work addresses the moral boundaries of concern for animals through empathy and speciesism (Mazé, Arnoult, Lefebvre & Zerhouni, 2026) and the effects of sexist video games on gender-related associations (Sarda, Zerhouni et al., 2021). An earlier city-level study showed that indirect measures of prejudice predicted participation in the Charlie-Hebdo rallies (Zerhouni, Rougier & Muller, 2016).

Open science, replication and research methodology

A final strand contributes to better research practices in the cognitive and social sciences. I have taken part in landmark pre-registered multi-lab replications of the ego-depletion effect (Hagger et al., 2016; Dang et al., 2020) and of behavioral priming (O’Donnell et al., 2018), as well as multi-country projects on resilience and adherence to COVID-19 guidelines within the COVIDiSTRESS consortium (Yamada et al., 2021; Lieberoth et al., 2021). I have also co-authored methodological recommendations for meta-analyses in health and medicine (Boudesseul, Zerhouni et al., 2021) and contributed to the validation of psychometric scales (Lalot, Zerhouni et al., 2019; Houtin, Akinyemi & Zerhouni, 2021).
